As guest speaker this year, we are fortunate to have Henry Milner, who recently published his political memoir “Participant Observer : An Unconventional Life in Politics and Academia”. Henry was on the executive team of the Parti Québecois under René Lévesque and chair of the party’s international relations committee. He was active in movements to reform Quebec’s educational system, and, later, Quebec and Canada’s electoral system. In the years in between Henry taught regularly in Sweden, publishing several books about Scandinavian social democracy. He was close to Gosta Rehn, architect of the Swedish economic model and to Bernt Carlsson, Olof Palme’s unofficial ambassador to political movements in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
“Milner was born in a bunker in American occupied Germany. His parents, who had survived the war in the USSR, moved the family to Canada in 1951. Earning a BA from McGill and his MA and PhD from Carleton, he spent his teaching career first at Vanier College and then based at the University of Montreal.“
